I actually saw a Five/Peri serial not long ago and hadn't seen Peri yet. Thought she was totally fine and interesting. Not annoying in the least.

Was it Planet of Fire or Caves of Androzani? They're both quite good, and Peri has a great line in the first one (Talking to the Master: "So what? I'm Perpugilliam Brown, and I can shout just as loud as you can!"). She does suffer a little bit of needing-to-be-saved in each of them, but you're right, she's totally fine. Sometimes it baffles me why people don't like her. I mean, it's not like none of the other companions ever complained about anything...

"Caves of Androzani," actually. I was at one time deliberately trying to go through all the serials where the Doctor regenerates that I could find.

She was a little helpless at points, yes, but she was kind of dying of exposure to the weird germy things at the time. I though it was justified!

(A lot of people who I do not know very well were doing this meme, and I kept going 'Ooh!!!' but didn't want to comment, because when people I do not know very well comment on memes where I am supposed to remember things about them, I usually wind up staring blankly at my computer screen and then running away.)

I loved that Peri was willing to yell at him (hello, precursor to anything here?)
What I like noting at every opportuniy is that the Doctor makes a big deal of willhoven told River Song his name, but on Ravalox he's ready to rattle it off perfectly casually to Peri.
