i really need to make my own doctor who icon at some point; this one is distracting

You know, I could really get used to this 'being able to watch an episode soon enough that I'm not far behind everyone else' thing. I really could.
Is it a bad thing that my main criteria for 'realistic visual portrayal of ancient Rome/Italy/Greece/etcetera' is 'looks like Rome'? Which it certainly did, by the way. So that's probably a good thing.

Whoever played Evelina looks hella like Jennifer Morrison, doesn't she?

Is that the chick from 'House'? Because if so, then I totally agree with you. I couldn't get over how much they looked alike.

Ohyes. Took me a moment to get it at first, but then it clicked.

Personally, I spent the first ten minutes looking around for a toga-clad House.

Rome: this would be because they were using some of the Rome sets. No, seriously. Remember, Rome was partly co-produced by the Brits, and those sets were way too expensive not to be reused by later tv shows.

Donna has a theme of her own, which is on the season 3 soundtrack, like Martha's theme. It's in "Runaway Bride" and we heard it in "Partners in Crime" again - that jazzy melody playing when we see Donna and the Doctor going to work. BTW, you must get the season 3 soundtrack. Some of the melodies, like the one you'll remember from Sound of Drums in the scene where the Doctor tells Martha and Jack about the initiation time in Gallifrey and the Master, which I now learned is called "This is Gallifrey: our childhood, our home" are just so awesome.

Donna and the Doctor just have a great dynamic, and yes, so refreshing that it's without the UST. I love them to bits together.

I knew it! I saw them and said, that's got to be the Rome set. Took me a while longer to recognize Peter Capaldi...

The BBC: having experience on saving money since decades.*g* (You know where the I, Claudius sets and togas went back in the 70s? Straight to the Julius Caesar as filmed by the Beeb at the time.)

Hah! Thrifty folks, the Brits are. *g* Good idea, too; ever since Rome, I've had some fairly high standards, and it was nice to see them met.

*looks back in her files and finds Donna's theme* Ooooooh, I forgot about that! Nice one. Very...light-hearted, I think, which I personally consider to be a good sign. I'd love to get the soundtrack--hell, I'd love to get the Heroes soundtrack, too, and the second season of DW had that lovely violin bit in 'The Impossible Planet'--so, hrm, maybe...gah, there's so many things! How expensive are they?

LOL. I loved this episode. The ending made me giggle even though I knew it was coming, As I'm going to post on my journal the only problem I had was the Pompeii inaccuracies cause I'm a big classics geek but still ^^ I like to think of it as Pompeii AU as it were

This episode? Loved - not as much as the last one (HAAA) but still, loved. I mean, come on: Fawlty Towers & Mary Poppins references, Donna being serious, Doctor being silly... Mm. Yay. (Though, seriously - "you have something on your back"? I kept expecting for her to turn around and have a KICK ME sign stuck on her toga.)

Speaking of music: is it just me, or is there a slightly different theme song this season?

You are indeed correct! The theme is different, and has been since 'Voyage of the Damned'. Personally, I rather like it--it's a bit, mm, rock-er. I suppose it is meant to signify a shift in the show of some kind or another.

It is nicer. I only picked up on it because I was listening and I thought, hey, this sounds less VWORP-VWORPish than usual.

Being a lover of rubbish running gags, I really liked the locals assuming The Doctor was Welsh due to his poor attempts to speak Latin. ("Look you!", "There's lovely!" etc).

Oh, same here, although I suspect the jokes would have had more impact if I could hear what he was saying. Damned incidental music!
