OMG OMG OMG HUGE news!

The tunnel! I think I know what it is! Its for PEOPLE! It's so that people could get down to the ferry after watching the horse races on the speedway! It makes so much sense... OMG I'm so excited! What if we brought it back!? What if we had boats there!!

It's just a theory....but there are remnants of a pier down there... below

That's a fascinating notion! But, WHY was it bricked over? Are there any safety hazards?

I believe there are abandoned road tunnels approaching the George Washington Bridge in upper manhattan. They've never been used since the planners and engineers kind of changed their minds in the middle of the expressway construction. I don't know where I found that information.

Anyway, there have been proposals to use the tunnels for automobile traffic but nobody can figure out quite how to do it since they kind of connect nowhere to nowhere. Then again, like any other kind of road project in Manhattan, there's really NOTHING that can be done to improve the traffic situation whatsoever. Traffic is going to be hopeless no matter what.
