Stilgar had looked completely confused when Leto had asked him about two of his most trusted Fremen warriors. Irulan seemed oblivious to the fact that half of her hat collection was gone. And Farad'n didn't remember who Tyekanik was.

That might be explained away, perhaps, but the visions were terrifying. Leto had stumbled as the last one struck him ( Read more... )

Alice had a phone.

Computers were verboten on Arrakis, due to the war against thinking machines in the universe's past, but Alice had become fond of the internet, during her sojourn on Fandom. As a compromise, she had obtained a new phone, to replace the one she had destroyed over midsummer. It was capable of viewing webpages and accessing her e-mail, as well as playing entertaining games such as the one where one flung birds at pigs.

It was hardly capable of world domination, unless the disgruntled birds gained sentience, and it was easy to hide in one's pockets, which made it perfect for communicating with Fandom while not upsetting those who still quite naturally were leery of thinking machines.

She hadn't the time to for games of vengeful birds, but she did steal moments now and then while Hania napped to view updates. Such as a rather striking one from Portalocity.

She glanced up sharply when Leto entered their room.

"They're closing portals," she said.

"They are what?!" He stopped, hesitating for a moment, then entered the room and sat down next to her. "Alice, my visions are changing too fast. I can't say what this means, but there is danger in this universe. Are you saying that you won't be able to leave?"

Alice was the only one apart from him who seemed to notice the changes, and he wasn't sure what that meant either. "You and Hania... I want you to go somewhere safe."

"The portals aren't functioning," she explained. "They're trying to hide it. Portalocity can't control whatever's coming."

Alice held out her phone, that he might read the message himself. It was too nuanced and too filled with political double-speak to be translate properly, and she wanted his interpretation alongside her own.

"I don't think the danger's limited to this universe," she said. "I ... I don't want to leave you."

But added to that was a sudden visceral need to protect their child, sleeping safely not two feet away. If it meant leaving Leto, if it meant hiding in Wonderland with her, if it meant traveling through Hell itself, this darkness would not touch Hania. No.

"Is this something we can fight?"

He read it, taking in the meaning, then looked at Alice. "I don't want to leave you either. But I can't see a way to fight this, not yet at least, and I couldn't bear to see you and Hania become the victims of it." He leaned close, wrapping an arm around her, hoping for some feeling of comfort.

"Have you tried contacting anyone in Fandom?" With the connections that place had to all the different universes, perhaps someone knew something.
