Amen. The genre needs a shot of originality. It needs a shot of something new! Don't get me wrong. I LOVE a classic sword and sorcery story that is just a pure and simple fantasy tale. But even that can have something new about it. Something fresh. I really can't read about another farm boy venturing off into the wild to conquer evil and slowly awakening to his latent magical powers.
My fear, as a fantasy writer, is that this is all that is out there to read because this is all that publishers are buying. But who knows? I'm not a publisher. I have some hope that this might not always be the case. Maybe if a really good novel that broke some of those stereotypes showed up on their door step they would give it a chance.
