Vancouver recommendations?

Feb 09, 2007 10:47

I'm flying to Vancouver for work, but I'd like to do some fun stuff while I'm there. Any recommendations or things I should avoid?

how long are you going to be in the area? mostly night-time after work stuff or are you going to have a weekend to play with?

I've got the weekend to play with. I fly in on Saturday and leave on Wednesday morning.

oh, excellent. The local goth night is Sanctuary, which runs on Sunday nights. If you're going this Saturday, there's Sin City at Richards on Richards.

The local SFBG/Boston Phoenix equivalent is The Georgia Straight. Browse through that for music, club, movie and museum listings. The restaurants guide isn't bad either ( ... )

Finally, it should be mentioned that all of the really, really fun stuff to do in YVR involve the outdoors. If you ski or snowboard, you can literally go from downtown to the base of Grouse Mountain within 20 minutes. Cypress Mountain is 30 minutes away. Whistler Blackcomb is a little further, but it's one of the premier resorts (if not the premier resort) in North America.

I would avoid people whose insides want to get out. At all costs.

All I'm going to say is, I'm sick of the scent of disinfectant.

http://www.granvilleisland.com/en/node (market and food and shopping and arts)
http://www.tomatofreshfoodcafe.com/ (really good breakfasts)
http://www.salmonhouse.com/ (I have their cookbook)
http://www.thenaam.com/naam/ (good veggie food)
If you want to spend some time out of the city, go up to Whistler and ski, or there are other mountains nearer to the city. You could also take the ferry over to Victoria or to Nanaimo (but not much to do in the latter, the trip is gorgeous though).
I've found http://www.vancouverchinesegarden.com/ a peaceful oasis in the city.
Let me know if you want a local contact, my sister and brother both live there.

I didn't get to go when I stopped by EA Vancouver a while back, but I heard Death-By-Chocolate is awesome.

I had a good meal at an odd little place called Lickerish.
