~.: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do your for your country." Sorry, that's a bunch of BS. I'm more than will to support my president, but I will not serve him. He works for me. My tax dollars go to his paycheck. I will do more than my share for my country- the government is another matter entirely. This was a ( Read more... )

wow what does Obama have to do with any of that? I don't want to be his servant, thanks, I want to be a good citizen of this country and a good person to my peers. I felt like this before I even knew who Obama was so why does he get all the credit?

I agree. The poor use of the word "servant" aside, many Americans are spoiled by the idea of what our country should do to serve and support us, they forget it's a give and take relationship. As citizens, we have a responsibility to each other and our country, and sometimes that means getting off our rumps instead of watching Project Runway. The moment Barack barely hinted that Americans actually have to put some real effort into helping to heal the country, you'd think Barack was trying to turn America into a monarchy judging by the way some people reacted.

He definitely has a lot of courage to keep telling it like it is, though this advert definitely demonstrates how it can go wrong at the drop of a single word.

Never mess with an American's leisure time! (Oh snap, he went there!)

Serving the country and serving the president are two different things. If we had less government interfering with everything from marriage to doctor's visits, Americans would actually have the opportunity to serve their country.

The quote isn't bullshit. It's a very good quote. But it's a two way street in my mind. My country insures that I have certain rights and liberties, but I also have to make sure my country remains that way. We serve each other ( ... )

I would love to make my country a better place. I don't need a video to encourage me to do what I'm already doing to the best of my ability.

And you're right, the quote isn't crap, but in the context it was being quoted at me it was. ^^;

I can understand why you're upset. By definition, "servant" wasn't such a bad word to use, but the underlying connotations that comes with that word means they could have thought of a gentler, more inspirational word. I feel like the whole commercial flows smoothly, with a build in emotion, but the word "servant" killed it all.

It's just an advertisement. A bunch of celebrities are telling you to serve Barack Obama. I'm sure you know that you don't really have to serve him simply because Ashton Kutcher told you to. :3

I think the advert is only a message: Everyone should get off their lazy rumps and do something for other people and our country (if they haven't already). We must be the change we want to see, otherwise we're just hypocrites with double standards.

In a nutshell: They could have used a better word than "servant," but the advert is otherwise lovely.

I have nothing against the video as a whole- I agree with everything aside from the politics. And servant isn't necessarily a bad word, but in any situation Americans are not supposed to serve the president. He is there is serve us. That's why he gets elected. He gets elected because the majority of the country supposedly feels he makes a good head of state and would lead us best in matters of politics and war. Had I voted for him, I wouldn't have voted for him with the thought, "well, Mr. President, what can I do for you today?? :)" It was never meant to be that way. Servant isn't a bad word on its own, but it was totally inappropriate in this video, along with the implied sentiment behind it.
