That hole down there? No, it's not a mysterious vortex of doom~~

~.: Vaginas are awesome. For the most part, unfortunately, women see their vaginas as mysterious, uncharted territory, dangerous to venture into, much less think about. This post is a result of not only the weeks of the "Woman, love thyself!" campaigning that's been going on on campus, but also of a conversation between Layne and I. Seriously ( Read more... )

Actually, it's the obsession with genitalia that keeps me from being friendly with the nonpolitical aspects of the feminist movement. I'm not a woman because of my genitals- they're an incidental part of who I am, the same as my stomach or liver. Important, but I have never understood all the fuss about it.

I dunno, I wrote a long rant on how demeaning I found it to have my vagina celebrated when it doesn't define me as a person any more than my hands do. It's just another organ, and while it's very nice, the only part of me I want to be known and respected for is my brain.

Except that only women have vaginas. Everyone is born with a brain (and if they're not, they die- nothing to celebrate there) and a heart and basically all the other organs essential for being alive, otherwise they die. Yeah, there are cases of hermaphrodites, but I don't think I've heard of anyone being born without a penis or vagina. It's the main body part that humans use to distinguish between the sexes (gender is another thing altogether). We're obsessed (and by we I don't mean feminists, because I kinda can't stand them) with genitalia because it's the only thing that naturally sets us apart from men.

My mind sets me apart from every other human being on the planet, and that's the only distinction I need. I don't care about the physical differences between me and a man- that's all incidental, and if some wires had gotten crossed in my brain, then I would be a man with a vagina ( ... )

I both agree and disagree with you. Yes, who you are as an individual and your specific qualities, talents, and traits should be the things you take pride in (because you generally hone those and you can't really hone having a vagina, so there's no pride involved). I just think that being happy and celebrating it as opposed to loathing and not wanting to go there is a much better option. I didn't really mean it as a general thing. Just that there are too many women who are all "we don't talk about vaginas ... that's dirty" and it's like "no, no it's not- it's natural and part of who you are and the only thing that human beings can't ascribe to you to define who you are- that's all you."

But congrats on getting accepted to MBC. I found out that the apartments you were looking at are also the apartments where my one friend lives, so you'll be right there by campus, though you will likely have a nice ten minute walk from your apartment to the lower end of campus (assuming you'll be living in those apartments).

Loooooong story. I'd rather not get into it. It was more for myself than anything- therapeutic journaling. But I didn't feel the need to put it on a filter or lock the comments because ... iunno, I just don't do that. ^^;
