Ah, someone who agrees with me! It currently 3:2 now. XD I also like to work on the floor, because I just don't like sitting at a table unless I'm sewing. I did actually have 2 very nice work desk, but now they are in the trash because they "didn't go with the rest of the basement". (This really got me angry because they were perfectly good 300 dollar desks that I simply loved to sew and paint on.) thank you for the link! I'll have to show my parents and see what they think. (I simply love cardboard boxes. I keep everything in them XD) So overall thank you very much for the input! Maybe i can finnaly make my parents understand that cabins and countertops won't work. XD
*rolls eyes at the 2 tables gone* well... try to understand their point of view. There are neat and tidy hobbies: Knitting - Jewelry making - Scrapbooking - Most types of sewing. Then there's messy hobbies: Woodworking - Pottery - Fursuit construction. When the two come into contact with each other there's bound to be a clash.
For some people, hobbies are all about the form... cabinets, matched furniture, a nicely decorated room.
Me personally, everything must be functional first. Tables are going to get dented, glue and paint spilled, etc. I don't see it as ugly, rather, it's a sign that real work has been done!
Not sure how large the basement is, but mayyybe you can have a corner of the basement for your stuff? And offer it to others if their project grows to need a "messy area"?
" Tables are going to get dented, glue and paint spilled, etc." That's exactly what I tell my parents. That marble counter tops will get ruined, but they wont listen.
"For some people, hobbies are all about the form... cabinets, matched furniture, a nicely decorated room." Yup, that my Mom. For me, as long as it works, no sense messing with it. XD
There's actually a separate room in the basement that I used to work in. I think its about 16 by 16 maybe? But, when it was only me working in there, all my stuff took up the WHOLE room. I have no idea how my parents are going to fit all there stuff in the too. ;/ but anyways, thank you for the suggestions and the help! :D
I agree with you the cabinets and counters wont be that great for suit making, the best thing is having a long desk and enough room for one or two of those costco type shelves to keep all your fur and foam and misc supplies! Youll want to keep your stuff separate from hers since fur and foam fibers disperse... well everywhere. Unless she is okay with fabric fibers getting all over her scrapbooks.
To me, its more so all of the supplies that needs all the space and not the desk where you work. I have a wrap around desk that I work at but the majority of my workroom is designed for storage. Here is the tour of my workroom on my official fursuit facebook if you need an idea :>
If your parents are concerned with having an attractive craft room (totally understandable) there are a couple things you can do to have a nice-looking work space that still meets your needs. I'm assuming there's decent budget if they're thinking marble counters, so I'm linking some furniture that might appeal to them

here is my room. It has three custom tables, one with cubby holes. One which is a sewing machine table with a hidden cubby hole for sewing threads. And a computer table with a screen to keep fur fibers out.
