Making Body Pods

Hey guys, this is more cosplay related, but I was wondering if I could still get any input.

I'm kind of in a pickle about how to make a body for rotund characters such as Judd the cat from Splatoon.

In my opinion, you'd want to puzzle piece together a round pod made from harder foam, the kind that would make a sound if you knock on it. You wouldnt need hoops and it would be lighter.

Unfortunately I do not know what its called!

Hmm. Perhaps the stuff they make camping mats out of? I will have to do some google research.
