Paint pens

Looked around and I don't see any specific information on using Sharpie brand paint pens (water based) as a dry brushing tool. I used some on a bit of scrap fur last night and it looks fine but I decided to double check here before I start going wild on this actual head. I tried using a regular sharpie before on fur and it was awful. I'm planning ( Read more... )

I've never done that with Sharpies, but I do detailing all the time with Copics and Prismacolor markers. Use a clean toothbrush to work the color in, and do it very gently and gradually. If the Sharpie paint pens are anything like the art markers, they will leave a different, almost slightly tacky residue on the fur.

Cool, I have a bunch of prismas. I'm trying to stray from acrylics in favor of something a little more controllable in tiny details.

Works really well! http://studioneko.deviantart.com/gallery/25309113#/d27wzqw All the shading on that head were done with Copics/Prismas.

The black sharpies can eventually bleed and look "bluish," seen more than one mask with streaky blue smears around black fur

Yea sharpies were a disaster, but will paint pens do the same thing?

Oh i missed that part. I used paint pens a looong time ago, and outside of small touchups and stuff, i am not a big fan, if they are water based the ink is going to eventually fade/get fuzzy. You can drybrush by hand with airbrush paints, though! Thats pretty easy

water based? Then it'll run when it get damp so not a good idea. Copic/ Prismas are okay because their alcohol based, however while they're fine with gentle spot cleaning, they will almost completely wash out in a washing machine (has tested prismas).

Hm.

I've been avoiding the purchase of an airbrush unit...I guess I won't be able to make up excuses of why I don't need one for very much longer.

I sometimes use paint pens to touch up on spots that I didn't get when I initially did my first dry brushing. I personally didn't have any issues with it washing out on my tails =3.
One thing I really recommend though is looking into FW inks on dickblick. They make dry brushing so easy and it really works like a dream!
Otherwise I think those paint pens work fine. :3
