I think it's because most men, sexual preferences aside, like to initiate contact, but are really bad about responding to it.

I'd say it's a toss up.
Don't downplay that with cats love comes down to "When did they feed me last?" and the business about staying at your side is 50% power play with the other cats (and humans). Good to see you surfacing.
