When the voicemail picks up, it's a girl's voice that speaks;

"Hi, this is Jono Starsmore's phone. Please leave a message and he'll get back to you. Thanks!"

Oh, yes. In all her current hatred for evil fish, Ariel had to text her big brother, too. Had to. If she didn't vent, she'd explode.

"OMG. SO grumpier than u right now, I guarantee it. :("

"Um, hi, Jono, it's Sookie," she said when she called Wednesday afternoon, trying to keep her voice from completely cracking and betraying everything over the phone. "Um, I...I kind of need your help. Can you please meet me in the preserve? Thank you. I'll see you in a bit?"

"Jono? It's Alice. I've been unexpectedly called away, and I don't know when or how I shall be returning, so please consider this my resignation and your promotion to my place as -- to be honest, I'm not entirely sure what my position was, but I fancied myself 'manager' so you can use the title should you like. I have every confidence in you. Is that Didi's voice on your message? I suppose that makes sense. And I'm quite sorry if I've reacted oddly to the fire-scent near you. It's an old wound and little to do with you, so there's no point in me bringing it up, except that I'm leaving and I don't know what else to say. I suppose that means this is an excellent time to hang up. Good luck."

"I miss you, Jono. There's no real point to this message other than to let you know that the people here miss you and we're working hard to get you back home and, damn it, you do anything you have to do to get home safe and sound, you hear me? If you don't, I'll--I'll--I'll go to your room and scratch the back of every of those big, black CD's I can find! I will!"

If the threat didn't get Jono back, the glaring ignorance Karla had just accidentally displayed sure as Hell would.

A letter on pale green stationary slipped under Jono's door:

Hi Jono -

If the world works the way I want it to, you'll never read this. I'll come find you instead, and we'll laugh and go watch a movie. Maybe you'll only roll your eyes a little when I ask for a cartoon. Maybe I'll give in and it'll be a horror movie and I'll hide against your shoulder.

But if the world doesn't work that way, this might be goodbye.

I'm sorry I'm not saying it to your face. I'm sorry I have to go so soon, and I'm sorry I won't come back -- but I'm not sorry for the last year. Not for any of it. I'll never be sorry for one lousy second of what we had, not ever, and, Jonothon, I hope you never are either.

I love you. And now, I'll go and look for you some more. I hope I find you.

Yours,

Didi
