Office 14 [Thursday late morning and early afternoon]

Classes. They were done. And even if Max was still trying to get some of the glitter out of his hair he considered the most recent batch to be a success. It helped that the students he had been given were conscientious (well, in a way) and competent. And now he was looking forward to a well-deserved break ( Read more... )

Momoko knocked on the door, a cheerful grin on her face as she waited for Centurion's permission to enter. She was also holding a box, if one wondered.

"Well, it was totally a fun class! I miss working with a team and your class was all about that! It's nice to be a part of a fighting group again, even if it's only in class!"

"I was never entirely clear on what things are like for you back home. I figured you must have had some team experience, though."

Momoko was more than eager to talk to him about it!

"Yep! I'm the leader of a whole team back home! There's three of us, and then the Professor and Ken and Peach, too, although they don't fight." Except that once, but she didn't like to remember that. "I think we're an... irregular unit? We each have our own attacks and weapons, but they all can work together when we fight a monster! But, like, it totally takes both me and Bubbles to lift Buttercup's hammer even a little, and she can swing it with just one hand!"

"Sounds like fun," Max smiled a bit fondly. Even he wasn't immune to Momoko's infectious levels of excitement.

Another person who thought she was playing a game. Momoko sighed and gave him an exasperated look. "It's not fun! Well, it is because I totally love it, but it's dangerous, too. Sure we don't kill anyone, and sometimes the monsters escape or just return to being normal, but people get hurt and there's lots of damages! It's still a pretty serious job; it's not a game or anything."

"I never said it was," Max counters, lifting an eyebrow. "But it sounds like a lot of people seem to think so."

"Sorry." She blew a sigh and looked about for a chair. She hadn't really talked about this to any of her teachers. "Okay, see? I said I'd stop him if I thought he was going too far and he said I was putting everyone in danger and that I should totally not be fighting because they'd be so distracted wondering who's side I was on! Which is stupid because I'm totally on the side of Justice and helping save people, even if they're monsters, which means that we shouldn't judge someone and try to kill them if we can stop them some other way, right?"

Max had a hard time following all that, so he started at the beginning. "Wait. Who did you say you'd stop?"

Eh?

"Reno." Hadn't she said? Whoops! "But really, anyone, if it was necessary. I mean, you can't just go around killing someone when all you need to do is stop them. We kind of had a big fight about it at one of the Reserve meetings."

Max opened his mouth to point out that sometimes it was much safer to kill them, but... He actually preferred Momoko the way she was. If she never had to learn that lesson, well, that would be best.

"I take it that he didn't agree with you." He cocked his head. "He accused you of just playing, I take it?"

She nodded, then her eyes widened and she waved her hands at him. "Ah! But we're okay now! We talked all about it and we're friends and everything still!"

"Somehow," Max chuckled, "I'm not surprised." The thought of Momoko not being okay with someone was hard to imagine.

"That's because Reno's totally awesome!" She kind of had a 'big brother' complex for him, yes. "But it was so nice to be with a team that talked about fighting and stopping an enemy and not about how to kill something. Not that it isn't important sometimes, but not all the time!"

"That's true enough," Max agreed. "Sometimes it's better to let them live, in fact." From a tactical standpoint, he meant.

"Totally! I mean, if we'd killed Sedusa, then Sakurako wouldn't be alive to make my favourite treats or get engaged to Souichirou and I don't even want to know what would have happened to Miyako if we'd had to kill Takaaki after all!" Momoko shook her head with a thoughtful muse.
