I have to laugh at the fact no one so far has claimed Gryffindor for their house! Why do you think that might be? I'm not sure - at first I thought people were being self-deprecating, but then the fact so many claimed Ravenclaw (the "smart" house) suggests they're not.

I actually put Gryffindor first but that was a mis-poke of the mouse.

I think it's less about being self-deprecating and more about perceived expectations of Gryffindor -- especially after the film showings last night, I bet a lot of people are still associating "Gryffindor" with Harry- and Neville-caliber feats of courage and will, and I think most people are probably just not up for that most of the time.

Though, I used to think my secondary house (aka the one I think I would be in if Slytherin didn't exist) was Ravenclaw, but over the years and with multiple rereadings, I think Gryffindor is closer to the truth.

I associate 'theft' with the intention to take what isn't yours. Walking off with someone else's pen accidentally is accidental theft, but usually when the person realizes they have someone else's pen there's more time, effort, and gas money involved in the pen's return than the pen is worth. Unless it's a custom-made pen, with curly feathers and an old-fashioned nib, but then I'd be more inclined to think the theft was intentional.

Anyway, who hasn't stopped themselves in the brink of time and brought the pen back with an self-deprecating "Oops! Sorry!"?

I used to think I was a Ravenclaw with Hufflepuff tendencies, but over the years I've come to realize it's the other way around.

I don't think theft and intent have anything to do with one another. If I take something that doesn't belong to me, the person it does belong to no longer has it, whatever I intended. As far as that person is concerned, strictly speaking, I have stolen from them. Now, they might not give a shit if it's a tiny thing like a pen or a lighter or whatever, but the fact does remain that an item they own has changed hands without their consent ( ... )

I have one friend that I've had since age 3-4 but since we're only semi-acquainted on fb now, I don't think it counts. Went with college friends that I've had more recently consistent relationships with.

I really am such a gryffindor/slytherin split. At 11 I would have wanted Slytherin but been more Gryffindor and now the opposite is true. I imagine if the hat would have put me in Gryffindor, I'd be more Gryffindory now but alas this is fiction and real life made me a Slytherin.

It's theft, but unless the pen is expensive or has sentimental value I don't think most people are too concerned. I'm pretty ridiculous about hiding/hoarding my good pens though so it's probably something that would bug me if I were in a position to experience it often.

I meant friends as in you're still friends, not acquaintances. There are people I have known well over half my life whom I'm still in touch with, but they are not friends, even if they were once.

real life made me a Slytherin
Ha! That should be a bumper sticker. :D
