You know what I really hate? Fen looking down on other fen for how they engage in fandom. Like, the long-standing disdain for slash at certain archives, or the general disapproval of fan fiction in some circles, or fictional character shippers from one fandom disparaging RPS shippers from another, or ficcers/fanartists snubbing vidders or ( Read more... )

'Bite you to death' sounds reasonable to me and will now be incorporated into my vernacular, kthnx. <3

On the most basic level, I think one aspect of 'fandom dissing fandom' that gets my goat in particular is fanboy vs fangirl. Fanboy derision* of fangirl proclivities makes me want to punch them in the heads while laughing at the idiotic irony.

And then on top of that, the irony of me hating on fanboys for hating my corner of fandom. HURRR.

*disclaimer to note that this is of course not ALL fanboys. just in case people were wondering why I H8 ALL MENZ or something

Yes, this! Or rather, 'boy fandom' (that includes girls) hating 'girl fandom' (which includes boys).

Well basically yes! Because doing stereotypical-fangirl things is ever so much more despicable than fapping to lolis on imageboards, you know? -_- >.>

("I'll bite you to death -- originally 噛み殺すよ -- is the catchphrase of the dude in my icon. He is kind of awesome, if a tad homicidal.)

I think one of the things that you see with nerd-types a lot is this need to re-instate the same social structures that ostracized them when they were kids in a scenario where they find themselves in power to do it to someone else. Which bothers the hell out of me. I have one friend from college who was telling me not too long ago that she was deeply upset by another one of my friends who always treated her like she wasn't cool enough for him. He? Collected Godzilla toys. She? Read manga. But manga was apparently not cool enough for Godzilla ( ... )

I agree it's okay to be squicked by other people's kinks, but I don't -- at all -- agree that people from one corner of fandom are allowed to get away with being judgemental/snide towards people from other corners, for whatever reason. "Approve" is not a verb I believe should even exist between fen, because not one of us has the authority to decide what is and isn't worthy of approval on the fannish scale.

There's nothing wrong with disliking certain pursuits or avoiding certain corners of fandom -- but all sorts of things go wrong when we start talking about "approving" and "understanding", because there is a big difference between disliking slash and judging people because they like slash. I dislike real person fic and avoid it to the best of my ability, but a fair number of my friends are into the current AI RPF craze, so I keep seeing RPF squee on my Twitter feed, in the form of fangirling, links to fic, discussions of charity fundraisers, or whatever have you. Sometimes I see comments that cross the boundary into "creepy" for ( ... )

Ha, well, yes! The early-on moaning about Snarry and H/D and slash in general was borne of a moronic tendency to be judgemental of things we have no business being judgemental about, and yet we STILL DO NOT LEARN.

During SurveyFail, I came across a few comments of the "we the disenfranchised" sort that made me want to nuke the universe, but disagreement about anything during SurveyFail appeared to be taken as "ZOMG IMPLICIT SUPPORT OF THE INTRUDERS!!!111" and I was not in the mood. But I was still very annoyed. D:
