Hmmm, I think this is kind of what I think, yet at the same time, kind of not. I don't think people HAVE to warn for rape/noncon/dubcon/violence/chan to meet some community standard, but at the same time, I think if they purposefully DON'T warn, they are probably ignorant jackasses. And everyone has the right to pile on and TELL them that they are ignorant jackasses (but that is just a right of, like, life, pretty much, not a special right to only fandom non-warners
( ... )
See, I think a person always has a right to tell someone else they're an ignorant jackass, but I don't think that right is in any way related to community membership. I don't feel any qualms about individuals saying what they think as individuals -- it's when "I" becomes "we" that I get impatient, because while speaking for yourself is something I will always defend, speaking for an entire group, not so much. And when the statement is the equivalent of "you don't belong in fandom because of your evil ways", it's inherently a "we" statement, not an "I" statement, even if it's preceded by a mealy-mouthed "I think" -- because no individual actually gets to make decisions on other people's group memberships; they can only be justified in saying something like that when they have (or feel they have) predominant group support. So when a person speaks from a position of "here's how it is in fandom", they are essentially asserting that they have a group's interests in mind. And I just don't think fandom is that kind of group. I hope that

Yes, yes, I totally agree. We do not have an International Fandom Regulatory Committee to regulate anything! (Though, uh, whenever I see bad songfic, I REALLY REALLY wish people would have to petition the committee for a special dispensation in order to write it...) And knowing the kind of people who are in fandom, if anyone tried to organize a regulatory committee, everyone else (except for a few devoted followers) would decry it as a popularity contest/bad idea, and then shun that person... and over half of fandom would still not even know it was happening. It's far too fractured and diffuse a community to ever speak with anything approaching consensus

I loved this! It took me a long time to get through it but I thought it was very well-written and gave me a lot of insight.
I agree with most of what you've said here, with the addition that I would also say that while choosing to do or not do certain things that will make other people think you are a douchebag is a person's own personal responsibility (which I agree with tremendously-- I am going to do things because I don't want to make someone feel badly, not because they tell me I have to), it's also my personal responsibility to avoid someone if they are continually a douchebag to me. I think one of the things that people don't often bring up in fandom is that you don't have to include someone if their behavior is hurtful or otherwise unacceptable to your general mental health. It took me a long time to learn that it was totally okay to defriend people and refuse contact with people who I thought were complete jerks-- and, in fact, that it was my responsibility to do so

I just had a thought triggered by zia_narratora (pun intended)on her question about the pressure to conform in the HP fandom.
Now this is a sensitive topic, back when lj and respective fan writing sites became all uber obsessed with age ratings and what you were and weren't allowed to write about.
I kept my mouth shut mostly because I don't like to be dragged into these types of wank material. However...
There are some HP and Naruto fanfiction that I have semi written that I almost have no intention of posting only because of the age restrictions. It's underage kids having sex. It happens and I want to write about it, however I won't post it because of the possible fallout.
Hmm, I don't think you really have all that much to worry about, to be honest -- Harry/Draco, for example, except for future!fics, has always been all about underage kids having sex, and it's one of the biggest ships in the fandom. Unless of course you mean nine-year-olds having sex, in which case yes, I can see how that could pose a problem for some people. But I think the general consensus in the chan debate was basically that as long as chan is appropriately labelled (ha!), there is nothing wrong with it.
Yeah, HP definitely is. I'm surprised Naruto wouldn't be -- aren't all of the main characters underage? I mean, teacher/student relationships are tricky even in HP and they're not everyone's bag, but yeah, I agree that the venue in which you post something makes a big difference.
Yeah, some of the things being said lately just make my eyes spin in bewilderment and wonder if I accidentally ended up on a different planet whilst I wasn't looking. -_-

I guess it's where you're posting it.
For example I've a semi written very smutty underaged teen with her teacher. Not going to fly so well on ff.net or even the lj community that I'm in.
But....maybe I will post it, and label it accordingly. If anyone says anything I'll claim the 5th while pointing to Lolita.
