supported on two turned wooden pillars with hinged arrest mechanism and copper pans suspended on fine link chains all housed in a mahogany cabinet with glazed back,
sides, and front doors, ht. 28, wd. 32 3/4, dp. 16 1/2 in.

This set of Gold Standard Scales with weights is an extremely rare and important piece of early British Columbia history as it is the scale which apparently weighed every ounce of gold
that came out of Barkerville, BC. The set of Gold Standard scales was made by Howard and Davis, Boston for the Hudson’s Bay Post and came from the museum at Barkerville.
These scales were from the Hudson’s Bay Post there, written on the steel crossbar "Gold Standard Balance, Manufactured by Howard and Davis, Boston, Mass. Successors to B. Dearborn/Full Jeweled"

Rare Gold Standard Balance Scale by Howard & Davis of Boston. 20" tall polished steel and brass balance scale mounted on a 24" x 9" white marble base.
Brass plaques on both sides of the pediment read: "Gold Standard Balance/ Howard & Davis/ Manufacturers, Boston, U. S. A./ Full Jewelled".
This is the smaller, rarer version of the balance and appears all original. It comes with the original wood and glass enclosure measuring 31" across, 14" deep and 27" tall.
The top lifts up vertically to install or remove the scales. The pediment is supported by four block columns. There are glass windows on all sides.
It is accompanied by the original brass pans (the upper hardware marked "R" and "L"), three open-ended brass trays (the largest 13" x 10"),
a footed copper scoop (4.5" x 7") with brass counterpoise weight, a 10.5" x 5.5" x 5" leather-covered wooden handled-box containing
a complete set of brass weights with "Howard & Davis" paper label on the interior lid, plus an assortment of associated items (three check & bank books
from French & Company Bankers of The Dalles, Oregon, a French & Company canvas coin bag, an unmarked coin bag or pouch
and a 4.75" souvenir mining pan from a Sacramento observance in 1939.
Considered the preeminent Gold Rush balance. Miners claimed they were accurate enough to precisely measure a pencil mark.
The firm of Howard & Davis was founded in 1842 by Edward Howard and David P. Davis. They were originally known for their high-quality clocks and balances,
prior to manufacturing sewing machines and fire engines. Davis left the firm in 1857 and the firm dissolved.

Edward Howard was an inventor and manufacturer of watches, fire engines, and balances.
He operated as E. Howard & Co. from 1858 to 1861. Approximately 24 x 9 x 20.5 inches.

Please note that these scales were housed in huge cabinets measuring over six feet tall so the new owner will need to make a plinth/box for the scale to sit on allowing the center
rod and brass balance arm to drop to the proper height. Something roughly 12 inches square should be more than enough.Offered for auction is an extremely hard to come by scale
manufactured by Howard and Davis of Boston as part of their contract to supply the towns of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with highly accurate instruments
for determining official weights and measures. A historian of weights and measures wrote to tell me that this is only one of two of these scales which he knows of in private hands.
This example was made for the town of Auburn . The brass beam is stamped “CM” for Commonwealth of Massachusetts .
Howard and Davis existed from 1842 to1858 placing it in this time period.The height as photographed is about 44 inches high but the beam will lower about five inches once
the scale is placed on a stand/plinth/box. The brass beam is about 31.5 inches long. The plinth base is about 7 3/8 square excluding the mounting tabs.
The pans are about 12 5/8 inches in diameter. The complete instrument weighs about 62 pounds unboxed and will probably ship in two separate packages.
Pickup in person is welcome. Condition. One of the four cast iron mounting tabs is broken. One of the pans is suspended with three brass knurled knobs
the other two - so presumable one is missing. As seen in the last photograph one of the small steel plates which cover the bearing surface from which the pans are suspended is missing.
It also appears that the bearing is now upside down. A pin appears to hold it in place and could be tapped out allowing the bearing to be reoriented to its proper position and finally
the very point of the finial has a slight bend. Overall this scale is in very fine barn fresh condition and could use a further cleaning. The paint appears original and has traces of gold detailing.
Most of the surviving examples of these are held by towns and state offices. Only two in private hands including this example are know to a historian who has studied these matters for over 25 years. A rare piece indeed and by a storied company eventually to become the famed E Howard company -- builders of clocks and other instruments.
