Also there are tiny moments between the pain. Maybe it is some point in inbreath or outbreath or between. Or maybe between heartbeats.

I have found a similar approach helps for me with mental / emotional pain, as well. Yes, I might be hurting about x, but there is this other thing that is good and right in my life. If I can be aware of both, the pain is less.

Excuse the late reply. I'm sporadic with replying to things due to epic amounts of fatigue.
You know I read a book that advises to do exactly this. Living Well With Pain and Illness -

It basically applies Buddhist wisom to dealing with pain/illness. It is really good.
