Ladies and gentlemen, the first sentence of my personal statement for graduate admission:
On a torrid, stifling morning in June of 2008 in Mae Sot, Thailand, I stood in front a one-room classroom staring at twenty pre-school aged children that had no teacher.

try it this way: "On a stifling June morning in Mae Sot, Thailand, I stood in front a one-room classroom and stared at twenty pre-school aged children who had no teacher."
this is obviously going to be an awesome personal statement. just like you. I LOOOOOVE YOU.
