A
key date 1921 Saint-Gaudens double eagle was the star of the show as Heritage's
2013 July 11-14 US Coins Signature Auction, the official auction of the Summer FUN show in Orlando, saw nearly $9.9 million in rare coins change hands. All prices realized include a 17.5% buyer's premium.
The
Saint, an attractive MS61 example graded by NGC, crossed the auction block for $117,500. Unusually among the rare dates in the Saint-Gaudens series, the 1921 is as frequently found in circulated grades as in mint state grades, making mint state examples, when encountered, that much more desirable. Perhaps 50-60 examples of this date are known in Mint State.
A
1898 quarter eagle, at Proof-68 Deep Cameo the sole finest of the issue graded at PCGS brought a price commensurate with its beauty when it sold for $82,250 in Orlando. Proofs from the 1896-1898 period are known for their eye appeal, and this one's highly contrasted black-on-gold surfaces and razor-sharp devices are virtually immune to criticism, no matter how closely the coin is inspected.
A
proof 1848 half dollar, likely the finest of perhaps 4-6 examples known, changed hands in Orlando for $70,500. This PCGS-graded Gem dates from before the time that proof sets were commercially offered to collectors, and no official records were kept of the mintage. The 1848 half dollar has been known as a rarity in proof format since the 19th century.
Just a few of the many other highlights of this auction include:
1850-O $20 MS60 NGC 1817/3 50C MS64 PCGS. CAC. O-101a 1861-O $20 AU55 PCGS 1854 $3 PR63 Cameo PCGS 1856 $1 PR65 PCGS 1831 25C Small Letters MS66 PCGS. B-4 1795 $5 Small Eagle AU58 PCGS. Heritage Auctions launches website redesign
Heritage Auctions launches website redesign of HA.com Visitors to HA.com, the homepage for Heritage Auctions, the world's third largest auction house, will be greeted by a cleaner look and content-centric personalization today as part of a top-down redesign. The new look streamlines access to Heritage's 36 categories while retaining its industry-leading functionality for live bidding and collection cataloging services.
"Teams across the country worked for a year to make HA.com an even better starting point to build or sell a collection," said James Halperin, Co-founder of Heritage. "The site is cleaner and delivers a more customized experience, giving visitors and clients more tools to learn about the objects they love to collect."
New features make it easier for Heritage's 800,000+ online bidder members to find events, search by keyword or browse by category or auction and locate personal information such as MyBids, MyTrackedLots and MyCollection. New custom content blocks now serve up news and information about lots collectors are most interested in. Although HA.com may look different, all functionality will remain the same; members may access more than 3.5+ million prices realized - all for free - in Heritage's Permanent Auction Archives.
HA.com resoundingly ranks as the #1 website for fine art and high-end collectibles and started 2013 in the top .01 percent out of more than 150 million U.S. sites, with an ever-increasing number of visits coming from mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, according to data from Compete.com. Heritage was named by Robb Report as one of 'Luxury's 25 Most Innovative Brands' in its August 2013 edition.
Heritage recently enhanced imaging viewing options on the site by giving its 800,000+ online bidder-members the ability to pick between multiple views of high-resolution images and new Pan and Zoom feature and navigation controls are now available for all Heritage lots, including the 3.5+ million lots in its auction archives. The enhancement is one more way Heritage has redefined industry standards to allow anyone who registers on HA.com unlimited free access to high-resolution images, making it the largest free source of high-quality images of fine art and collectibles on the internet.
Members also may now sign in using PayPal, the most popular payment methods used by collectors on mobile devices, in addition to receiving text messages on their smartphones when lots they are bidding on, tracking or consigning are coming up for auction
