Sousuke stood with his cellphone in hand, looking out the window of his dorm room as he made his report to his superiors at Mithril. Due to the state of his shoulder, he'd been unable to type, and was thus forced to deliver the information over their secure line.
"--I did have some troubles with the local law enforcement, but I believe that's been cleared up. I don't anticipate problems now that he's in custody."
There was a pause on the other end, and an awkward throat clearing that wasn't typical of Lieutenant Commander Kalinin. "I regret to inform you, Sergeant, that Leonard Testarossa is no longer in the hands of the authorities. They were forced to release him yesterday. It seems Amalgam came to his rescue, much as we came to yours."
"What?"
"There was nothing we could have done to prevent it."
"We could have taken him into custody ourselves!" he shouted back, heedless of the disrespect it showed the man who was one of the closest things he'd ever had to a parent.
"Given the situation, it wasn't advisable."
"He kidnapped her. He hurt her. He could have killed her, and now he's free? I should have killed him."
"Sergent, need I remind you this is the Captain's brother we're discussing?"
"Why should that matter? He's a terrorist. His relationship to the Captain is irrelevant, and it shouldn't be interfering the way we deal with him or Amalgam!"
"Sergent," Kalinin repeated in a warning tone. "I'm going to overlook this outburst for now. I suggest you take some time to calm down. It's clear the situation has unsettled you."
"I don't want to be calm," he replied coolly. "I want Leonard Testarossa dealt with. I'll do it myself, if I have to."
"You'll do no such thing, unless you want to be fired, and all of your support from Mithril withdrawn. Which, I may remind you, includes the student visa you're using to remain in the United States. You'd be deported."
"...am I being threatened?"
"You're being warned, Sergent. You're to have nothing further to do with Leonard or Amalgam. It's clear that were Angel is involved, you're incapable of rational action. If you were anyone else, you would be dismissed already."
"You need me to pilot the Arbalest."
"And that's the only thing saving you right now. Please keep that in mind."
There was a click as the transmission cut off. Sousuke stared at the phone in his hand before he tossed it aside.
"Damnit!"
The outburst was accompanied by a small cloud of dust, and the sound of plaster falling as his fist impacted the wall.
