If you were still nearby she was aware that you were near her babies and probably did not come because of that.

I don't.. I don't think so. [Wringing her hair] I waited, but she never came back. --And I waited inside, so she wouldn't hide from me, either. She .. never came to them, so I went and brought them inside.

It means they don't eat solid food yet. When they're young like this, they drink their mother's milk instead.

It's okay, their eyes and ears are open, so they've got a good start. We'll find things for them to eat instead that they'll like just as much.
