My mom takes a B12 vitamin before going out into the mosquitos. The smell comes out in your sweat. She swears by it and she is very attractive to them. I have never had much luck with it. I don't sweat as much as she does.

The bulbs will do fine in shade - they come up and bloom before the trees leaf out, and by the time the trees are providing full shade, the bulb foliage is dying back.

The burning bush might provide a nice spot of autumn color on the east end of the house, near the corner.

Butterfly bushes need full sun. They can also get quite large, but will die back to the ground each winter and start fresh in the spring.

I use wristbands impregnated with citronella oil and other smelly things to discourage mosquitoes. Let me know if you are interested and I will send you the link.

Someone suggested running a fan in the yard while you're out there, to keep the bugs off you. I thought it was a brilliant idea, but haven't run into enough bugs to bother with it. For some reason, this year, I've mostly been attracted to work outdoors when it's been raining. Works great, but I'm not trying to recommend it to others.
