DNA, in Derek's case. Stubbornness, in Scott's. But yeah, Stiles asks himself (and well, out loud too) that very same question fairly often ;)

I would have spoken to them separately and been like "don't you want to be the one to appear to be the bigger person and put aside your differences and get along with the other? That way everyone will see how you're trying and they're not?"

It coild probably work. And if not, then pull out the "do it for me" card.

To be fair, Stiles probably tried that. And then the normal mediating of "can't we all just get along?" style.
He's really just glad that he accidentally stumbled on something that worked ;) (the "please, for me?" card is still in play though, if it becomes necessary in the future.
