Author's Notes: So once upon a time I wrote a thing where Melissa was pregnant (
first response). There's still a sequel to that which I haven't finished, but this week's prompt invited a follow-up to that. Unbetaed. And apologies for being late.
“We’re not vampires, you know?”
Stiles huffs at Derek’s amused tone, but he doesn’t let go of his hand.
“You’re protective shapeshifters, and who knows what seeing Melissa in pain is going to do to your instincts,” he mumbles against Derek’s shoulder, the thought enough to make Stiles himself shudder.
“I’ve gotten better,” Derek responds, and Stiles smirks a little at the slightly petulant tone.
Because throughout Melissa’s pregnancy, there were several occasions when Derek’s protectiveness had to be curbed to normal levels. He’s been amazing, but more than once he slipped from caring Alpha werewolf to overprotective Papa bear. Stiles really isn’t keen on finding out how badly those instincts would be tested if Derek was anywhere closer to Melissa in labor than they are now.
He can’t pace, because he’s unwilling to let go of Derek’s hand, so he resorts to burying his face into Derek’s shirt and squeezing his fingers harder than he could were Derek a regular human.
“She’s going to be okay,” Derek mutters against Stiles’ hair, an echo of what Stiles said over and over since they found out about the baby. “They’re all going to be fine.”
“All?” Stiles meeps. “There’s only one baby, right?”
“Yes, Stiles, I would’ve told you… well no, I would’ve told Melissa first,” Derek says with a hint of laughter in his voice. “Only one sibling for you and Scott.”
“You know if it’s a girl or a boy?”
Stiles doesn’t really care, but it’s the only question his mind comes up with in an effort to distract himself. He should’ve left the instructional videos about giving birth alone.
“I’m not an ultrasound,” Derek huffs. “And I don’t have X-ray vision either. Not a superhero, as we established in the past.”
“Hey, you’re my superhero,” Stiles mumbles, smiling. “And I don’t know, I wondered if maybe boys smell different than girls, and if maybe you knew. Science.”
“You say science like that excuses your curiosity altogether,” Derek says. “DId you ask your Dad?”
“Yup, but Melissa didn’t want to find out, Dad said they didn’t care anyway,” Stiles grumbles weakly. “I mean, I don’t, I’m just…”
“Curious, as usual,” Derek finishes for him. “But you’ll know soon. Very soon.”
Stiles pulls away and he stares at Derek in realisation.
“Oh shit, you can hear, I didn’t think of that,” he blurts out.
“And I said it’s fine,” Derek tells him, giving Stiles’ hand a gentle squeeze. “But also…”
“Kid, you better watch your mouth from now on,” John’s voice rings through the waiting room. “Wouldn’t want your little brother to pick up certain words.”
Stiles almost trips himself up as he bolts out of the chair, hand still linked with Derek’s, and turns around to face John.
“Brother?” Stiles asks, eyes glued to the blue blanket bundle in John’s arms.
“Come on, meet Luke,” John says, and Stiles barely managed to stop himself from squeeing.
