"What are you doing?" James asked as he took his seat in the carriage on the Hogwarts Express. As Head Boy he had been checking on the younger students, many of whom had been over-indulging over the holidays and were paying for it now.
Peter looked up from the photo album he had been working on since the train had left London. "An extra Christmas present for Moony and Padfoot," he replied.
"Yeah?" James leaned forward to take a closer look. "Geez, Wormtail, how many pictures have you taken of the two of them?"
"Enough to fill the album five times over," Peter replied. "You think this will convince them to come out to us?"
James laughed as he looked at the picture Peter turned in his direction. Their friends clearly had no idea Peter, and his ever present camera, had been lurking nearby.
"Let's take a look then," James said as he moved seats to sit beside Peter.
Peter closed the album and passed it to him.
James turned to the first page and saw it contained photographs from their first year at Hogwarts. Peter had got his camera for Christmas that first year and had snapped dozens of photos within those first winter months.
Each picture on the page was of Remus and Sirius together. The two of them hadn't been inseparable, not like they seemed to be now, but they still hung out together and Peter had captured those moments with his camera.
As James flicked through the album he saw Peter had charted the progression of their years in Hogwarts. It was around fourth year that he started to notice a difference in the pictures. Subtle at first, but when you knew what you were looking for, it was right there in front of your eyes.
James could see it in Sirius first. There was a look of sappy adoration when he looked at Remus. James hadn't seen it at the time, but now he knew what he was looking for he wondered how he had missed it for so long.
By the end of fifth year, Remus's face held a similar expression when he looked at Sirius.
"When do you think they got together?" James asked.
"After the Shack business but before OWLs," Peter replied immediately. "I can't pinpoint it any closer than that, but if you turn the page you'll see the first real proof."
James did as Peter suggested and saw what he meant. "How did you get this without them noticing you?" he asked.
"They were kind of oblivious to everyone except each other."
"So I see," James said.
He turned from the picture of Sirius kissing Remus in the library, hidden behind the shelves to see what was next.
By sixth year Peter was clearly playing detective. Page after page of Sirius and Remus together. Touches, seemingly innocent, but frequent enough to make you wonder. Sitting next to each other in every group photo, when previously James had been between them. Leaning into each other and standing just a little too close for there to be only friendship between them.
And then there were the kisses. Peter had captured the two of them all over the school grounds, locked at the lip and with their hands all over each other.
"Does Sirius have his hands down Remus's pants on this one?" James whispered.
"Yeah," Peter confirmed. "I got out of there before they went much further. I wanted to get our evidence to confront them with, but I have to draw the line somewhere."
"Thank Godric for that," James muttered. "I was starting to worry about what I'd find from this year."
"You know they've been sharing a bed since September," Peter whispered.
"Pretty hard not to notice. Even though they keep messing up the covers to make it look like they stayed in their own beds they're not exactly quiet. If it isn't one of them tripping over their own feet, it's the other."
"This is a good one," James said. "Kind of arty."
The picture of the two of them, in silhouette was taken against the sunset. They weren't kissing, but it was obvious they were about to.
"I'm thinking of looking for a photography job after we leave school," Peter said. "Maybe at the Prophet or another paper."
"Good idea," James replied.
They finished looking through the album and Peter filled up the last few pages with his most recent pictures.

When they arrived at the castle Remus and Sirius were nowhere in sight.
"Let's go leave their present in the dorm and go track them down," Peter said. "They're probably raiding the kitchens."
"With a feast tonight?" James asked.
Peter shrugged. "You know Remus eats more round the full moon and it was just two nights ago."
It was as reasonable an explanation as any, but totally inaccurate, as they discovered when they arrived in the dormitory.
Remus and Sirius, despite it being early evening, were fast asleep in bed.
Even though the covers protected their modesty it was obvious they were naked beneath the sheets. Remus was on his back and Sirius was draped across his chest, his head resting on his lover's shoulder.
Peter lifted his finger to his lips, stopping James from waking the sleeping lovers. He quietly got his camera from his luggage and took a picture of the two of them. Then he took the album and slipped the photograph into the last page, substituting one of the others.
When they were done they placed the album on the bedside table, next to their wands, where they would be sure to find it as soon as they woke.
James and Peter were in the common room, getting ready to go downstairs for the feast, when Remus and Sirius found them.
"You knew?" Remus asked. They didn't have the photo album with them, but it was clear they had seen it. They held hands as they walked over to their friends. It seemed they were coming out not just to their oldest friends, but to everyone else as well.
James nodded. "Of course we knew. We're not blind."
Sirius laughed and shook his head. "You mean Peter's not blind. You'd still be clueless until you got the wedding invitation."
"You're getting married?" asked James, his jaw dropping.
"Figure of speech," Sirius replied. "We're two blokes, remember?"
Remus chuckled as Sirius wrapped him in his arms. "Though if he asked, I'd say yes."
"Why am I doing the asking?" Sirius complained. "You could ask me."
Peter laughed. "What have we done, James?" he asked. "They're going to be squabbling like an old married couple all the time now."
"Nah," Sirius said. "We'll be too busy making out now we don’t have to hide it."
They made their way to the portrait hole, looking forward to the feast.
"So when would you have told us?" James asked. "If we hadn't given you our present I mean?"
Sirius laughed. "Maybe today, maybe tomorrow, or perhaps in a year or two. Who knows? Does it really matter?"
As James watched two of his best friends walk ahead of him, hand in hand, he knew it didn't.
