More weather and a ridiculously simple recipe.

Yet another day spent doing nothing much except keeping warm. I made it to the library, through small flurries of snow and a wind like a skinning-knife. The temperature was a degree or so above freezing for the first time in a couple of days, but the wind more than negated that. Even in the middle of town, there was a lot less traffic than ( Read more... )

Your comment about the penguins made me laugh because that's what I do with my #2 son when it's cold out. He's BIG so makes for a good windbreak :-)

Nice recipe. I do love dumplings but make mine a bit bigger than yours. Especially good in beef stew.

Alas, I had far too much boiled chicken and boily-roast in my 1950s childhood. My chickens (particularly if really good ones) get roasted first, and the carcass makes the soup.

There are a lot of thoroughly-boiled things from my mother's repertoire that I'm not in the least keen on trying again, and I'm definitely with you on the boily-roast, but I've never really got the hang of roasting chicken, especially since my oven is a little temperamental, to say the least. Also (ahem), I'm bone-idle, and boiling gives me the stock and cooked chicken in one go!

Your mother's recipe sounds lovely. Oddly enough, I'm going to make MY mother's chicken soup tomorrow.
:)

Today was the coldest day here in years...don't laugh...a high of 8 ºC. We're dying here of the cold.
:P
We had below zero over night, the water in our garden hose froze and split it.That has never happened here before! It is now 3ºC. I expect more of teh same tonight.

Mine is much simpler.

chicken parts...whatever kind you prefer or a whole chicken cut up
lots of chopped celery
lots of sliced carrots
parsley
bay leaf
chopped onion
salt and pepper to taste

You can use a chicken bullion cube if you like also but that's too much sodium for us.

Put in a stock pot and simmer until chicken is tender.

Take out chicken

Make noodles of whatever sort you prefer

Serve broth with veggies and noodles and chicken.

Those simple ingredients make a wonderfully tasty soup.

I forgot a couple of ingredients, including the celery - now added.

People in places that are habitually very cold in winter seem to forget that everything is relative;p two inches of snow is a lot if you never get snow, and 8 degrees is damn cold if you normally get 15-20. It seems to have warmed up a bit here, so maybe it will get a bit warmer for you too soon!
