I remember the 1953 flood in Hammersmith and Chiswick. I was supposed to go to a school friend's birthday party but my mother wouldn't let me - I think she was nervous about flooding: Chiswick Mall, particularly at that time, regularly got covered in water even in normal circumstances.

We learned afterwards that they had to take refuge upstairs, and they knew exactly how high the water rose: there were trifle splodges on the dining room ceiling.

The fruit cake you describe sounds very like American fruitcake.
I love rabbit stew! A huge aphid....*grin* Good description!

The stew was delicious, far tastier than an aphid would have been, I'm sure!

British fruitcakes are similar, but with a much lower proportion of nuts or none at all, which is why the expression "nutty as a fruitcake" used to confuse me as a child. They usually come covered in marzipan and rock-hard white royal icing, decorated with figures of snowmen and Father Christmas that have been saved over many previous years and are falling apart. This is a perfect example, although ours always had a gold paper frill under the tartan ribbon.
