ETA: I found the latch! It was entirely hidden by the damn faceplate. I had to manipulate the faceplate a lot to even find the stupid latch, and I'd already looked for it several times before. But the knob is now off; thank you all for the help ( Read more... )

Try some brute force when
Spring weather brings you yard work.
Crow-bars are your friend.

Hee. Much appreciated, but I'm trying to not damage the door or doorframe!

Can you fit a right-angle screwdriver in there?

Not enough to get the screws out, no. There's very little space between the end of the screw and the faceplate, even with me prying it away as far as I can. :(

Can you take the screws out by grabbing the screw with a pair of pliers and twisting it?

It seems like there has to be some way to get it off. It was put on somehow!

Possibly, but the end of the screws would eventually press against the back of the faceplate and be stuck!

I'm a bit worried that getting it on - and therefore getting it off - required going in through the side of the door, which I can't access as it's stuck shut. :-/

I think you should just get a hacksaw and start gnawing that knob off of there. If that fails, bust out a drill (with a heavy duty drill bit) and gut the thing. Rage-filled cutting and drilling is more effective than rage-filled banging and prying. ;)
