The draft.

For the sake of argument, let's say I'm going to go through with this. If I become a man, does that mean I have to register for Selective Service? In other words, could I be drafted? Or could I get around that by explaining that I'm one of those sicko trannies? How does that work? Because I totally don't want to "die for my country".

Trans people can't serve, so no worries.

Well, I'm relieved, but now that I think about it, that's gotta suck for someone who actually wants to join the military.

While you can't serve, you should still apply for an exemption letter. If you change your social security and don't apply for exemption you won't be able to receive financial aid for school (if you need it) and you may face other legal issues.

Instructions can be found here.

The form.

You'll have to cross out the bit at the top that says you're older than 26 and fill out the part about being trans. They require a copy of your birth certificate (before it's amended, I assume).

They'll send you a status letter about a month later. I'm in the process of doing this as I speak.

Wow. Thanks for the tip. I am actually older than 26, though. The financial aid thing is an issue because I'm still in college.

Didn't mean to assume. I was just looking at my paperwork as I typed. :)

You're exempt because you're over 26, but still have to fill out the form.

Totally bizarre. Well, I won't have to worry about that for a long time. I don't even have health insurance yet. Waah!
