Transgender cops?

Nov 07, 2012 11:09

I'm looking at all my options for a career that I can get into. So I ask, can we (transgender folks) be police officers? I'm asking because we can't be drafted into war, so is this kinda the same thing? Has anyone heard about a cop that's transgender?

I don't know about other cities but in San Francisco, there are trans poilce officers, FTMs. Stephan Thorne is featured in the movie "You Don't Know Dick, Courageous Hearts of Transsexual Men" and in the book _Body Alchemy_ by Loren Cameron -- another trans man. Both the book and film are from the 90's. Stephan worked with the SF Police Dept. to develop policies to deal with trans people who are transitioning on the job. He transitioned on the job. There is at least one more trans man who is a police officer in SF, as I met another not long ago. So, it is possible, but it may depend on where you are.

I am very much post-transitioned (10+ years on T, etc, etc) and I am a Correctional Officer in a very conservative state. Being a CO is slightly different than a cop, but it's all under the Law Enforcement family. My agency is always hiring too, so it's an amazing foot in the door to later go into the "patrol" side.
