Hey guys,

I'm starting the process of getting my name changed in Texas. I have looked through the tags and found some helpful posts, this one being quite detailed and more recent. I have also found this link online. But I wanted to ask to see if there is any updated information or tips.

I changed my name in Dallas County in September 2009, so my experience isn't exactly new and updated, but it does mesh with the post you linked. (Or it would have, if I'd done it right. The Dallas County website used to link to outdated/inaccurate Travis County instructions, which helpfully included forms, and less helpfully included completely wrong instructions.)

if in a worst case scenario I don't do something correctly, do I have to repay the $252 filing fee to try again?
Well, I did pretty much everything wrong in the process of filing my petition, and I managed anyway. :) That said, I know a friend of mine who changed her name in Oklahoma didn't bring her order with her to her court date and had to go to court a second time (I can't remember whether she said she had to refile/repay or not). As long as you don't do that, I'd expect you'll be fine, but IANAL etc.

I read somewhere that their county required a credit report, how prevalent is this?Mine didn't, as far as I know. All I was told about were the DPS and FBI background ( ... )

I think I've seen those Travis County instructions, so I'll be sure to not use them. & I'll definitely check out that group. I do have some forms someone emailed me, but it's always good to double check whether they are the proper ones. Thanks!
