I don't talk to my mom for a multitude of reasons, so I am not sure what her response would be. My father however, has been super supportive dad. He gets every pronoun right, and never misses a beat with the new name. Its an easy transition for him, to go from Jamie to James... but he does it.

Here is my advice to you, as crass as it may seem: you have to do whats right for you even if it means that your mom doesn't talk to you anymore. I know thats a harsh reality, but its one of that each of us in this community lives with. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

I actually went ahead and changed my name and didn't tell them about it. They found out when they got a document sent to their address under my new name (I was in college and used their house as my permanent address). They were pissed and I wouldn't necessarily recommend going that route, but since they paid for my school I was afraid they would threaten to withdraw financial support to stop me from doing it. Ultimately they will probably get over it, if not be down with it. It's been seven years and my mom still doesn't call me by any name, but at least she doesn't use the wrong one.

Go to the court clerk in the area where you live and ask about name change. My family is very disrespectful about my name. I've grown a lot more distant from them because of it.

Wow. Two witnesses? That's crazy. It was so much easier here in Austin. I paid $200, walked up to the nice judge. She asked in a quiet voice if I had any bad intentions about changing my name, I said no, then she said OK. I was still full-on femme at the time, too.
