hey guys, has anyone had any problems coming out and telling your family and friends your 'new' name? when i came out at 14 i go by Shane cuz it seems closer to my real name, but apparently, my friends are so used to my real name they dont call me Shane. Now i go by Aiden cuz apparently, someone has a name Shane too in my school. How do you tell ( Read more... )

I would sit down with your friends and tell them exactly what you need and why. I had to do that with a friend who I didn't know was attending my college on the first day and while it was awkward, it was better than the alternative.

...because someone else has a /common name/ you're choosing a different one?

There really isn't an excuse for friends not respecting your request to be acknowledge as Shane, well, unless you're putting a bunch of guidelines like, "only in front of our friends" or something.

A really good friend of mine and myself, both thought it would be difficult for her to even see me as Jayson, but with the voice it just clicked and now she can't see herself calling me by her version of my given name.

Or ignore any name besides the one you want to be called? and then when they ask why you're being rude.. you can tell them because they're being disrespectful?

i know... these are long shots but sometimes.. you just run out of options.
