I'm in the middle of dealing with the Red Cross around this, and I wonder, actually, if that situation is having ripple effects.

I give regularly, and the last time I gave I pointed out that they had me incorrectly listed as female. I did not tell the person at the bloodmobile that I am a transsexual. I week or so later, I got a call from a very nice guy who told me that when there are questions about gender, they have to destroy the blood. I explained my status, and he said that they're supposed to list me as female. I explained that that was antithetical to their goals, because I am a man in every aspect of my life and if I were to sleep with another man, that would be gay sex. Additionally, I pointed out, I have literally not a single piece of ID that indicates I was ever female, and staff has no reason to believe me if I tell them that. He said he was going to "challenge some people," because he agreed with me, and that he'd get back to me. I haven't heard from him yet.

i've donated to NY blood something or other and so far, so good. I've neither announced nor denied that I was trans and there were no questions about injections or previous names. This was my first time donating with this particular group. If this thing with the red cross doesn't work---try another hospital or agency that does blood collection. you won't be in there system as someone else. Although I've heard that your birth name and changed name show up on background checks on social security numbers....but I have no idea if there's any weight behind that statement.

Of course, it's only been two weeks and who knows, tomorrow I may get that fated letter in the mail.

Did you ever get this changed? If so, when you have the time could you either respond to me here or make a new post about it?

I've read similar posts about people having trouble donating blood with Red Cross. Maybe search the memories or something. Unfortunately, I have no other input.

I would have answered negatively, simply because I never used to be a woman.

Then again, I don't donate blood for spiritual reasons.

So far at least according to my lab tech program's blood bank textbook, there is nothing about being trans, though I'm quite sure they'd go and count transwomen who had sex with cisgendered men as having engaged in homosexual sex.
