Gender Change at DOV

Dec 16, 1970 19:55

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get my driver's license changed from F to M in the State of Washington, King County to be exact? Or tell me who I should contact and how to go about doing it? Is this an easy process? Does it cost money? Where do I begin?

Thanks.

Try your county courthouse. I started in the law library. I asked the lady that works there.. she was very helpful. They don't have to know why and you don't have to explain if you don't want to. People get their names changed all the time. I think it varies quite a bit from county to county.. Turns out i had to fill out some paperwork, pay 155 bucks, and go in front of a judge briefly. Took one week for the entire process! I wish i had done it sooner but i was intimidated. If you're ready go give it a shot.. Good luck

It doesn't really matter what county you live in. It has to be done through the state DOL. The woman you need to talk to is Kristin Partain. Her number is 360.902.3847. She'll tell you that you need a letter from yourself stating that you have a current WADL and give yr current adress, phone number, and DL number. Plus, you need a letter from a treating physician or therapist in which they state their support of your gender change. You'll also need to send along a copy of yr DL.

I, unfortunately, got the main number for the DL when I inquired about this last month and had to go through a bit of an ordeal with the operator...she became very confused. Eventually though, I was directed to Kristin who deals with all the sex changes on DLs in WA state. She's very friendly and knowledgeable.

Good Luck.

Yep, what he said.

I never called her, but my therapist who had written gender change letters before wrote out my letter and gave me the person and address to send it to. I wrote a letter to go with it with all my info requesting the change and sent a copy of my driver's license and name change order (my name was already changed on my license but I sent it just in case). About 2-3 weeks later I got a letter from the state DOL declaring me legally male, you take that letter to any driver's license office and pay whatever the fee is to get a new license (I think it was around $15-$20) and you get your new license with an M on it.

It's very simple in this state, no surgical requirements, etc. You just need a therapist's letter stating that you are living full time as male and in the process of transition.

My doctor told me not to change the gender on my documents (including drivers license) because if a person developes ovarian cancer or something, insurance companies won't cover the surgery, even if it is live-saving, because men don't have ovaries ( ... )

You can change yourself to male everywhere but your health insurance. I know a lot of guys who have done that.
