Are those dating sims unplayably difficult? Are they designed to make as little sense as possible?

They're not "difficult," per say. It's just that those who play (and vouch for) them tend to lose their grip on reality.

There was an interview with one of the date-sim / visual novel localizers. He states that the reason why visual novels are not "BIG in the West" is because "we can't read."

Because, you know. (IMMHO...) People in the West play video games in order to feel a (false) sense of strength. We'd go watch professional teams play against each other; and we'd rather play Mortal Kombat, Halo, on down than play games that remind ourselves on how much our life SUCKS.

...that hard-earned, satisfying "Boom! Headshot!" you just can't get from any sissy game about "chasing after a girl who would never life you IRL." So yeah.
