They gave us Twisted MEGO Theater, which probably inspired dozens of imitator webcomics. (One I can immediately think of was Large Army, which unfortunately gave up the ghost right after 9/11.)
I'm not saying I disagree with you, 'cause I don't. But you are also giving them far too much credit. I don't blame Wizard for the speculation craze; I blame the publishers themselves for laying the gimmicks on thick and getting greedy. Wizard never pursuaded ME into buying anything. *shrug*
I can't say I'm surprised - the Internet has been beating them at their own game for many years now. Still a bit saddening to see some favorites of my younger days giving up the ghost...
I was always uncomfortable with the 'push' on collectability and rarity and value over quality and entertainment. The endless lists (with surprising holes in them because there was no 'heat' on a title or a toy line) which filled page after page. yeah, I guess that aspect I don't miss at all
