I thought VW already had plants in the U.S. I could have sworn I bought an American built Rabbit in '79.
Saturn failed because the guy who liked it left GM, and the new CEO had to kowtow to the unions who HATED that plant. People were happy working there, they had pride, they did their jobs right day in and day out, oh, how could such horror stand in the eyes of the unions?
It didn't help Saturn that they were held back from developing a SUV when the boom for them started. I still don't know if anyone bought their little sportster. I wasn't too impressed by it but boy I wanted a VUE really bad, if ever I had the money that is.
Horrible to think a successful company was completely destroyed due to politics, isn't it? It's not a new thing of course, but it's still sad.
The Rabbit built in the US was built in a plant near Pittsburgh. I know because I was living in the Pittsburgh area when the new plant was announced and started operation. The New Stanton plant was only in operation nine or ten years.
