No, not only in America. Quite common - in some incarnation - worldwide. Interestingly, the (1 male) + (multiple female) model outnumber the (one female) + (multiple male) at least 100:1. I *do* (as a former medical professional) understand the 'largest genetic distribution' concept, but there's still a huge misogynistic element in many cultural models. (and yes, as my anthropologist hubby points out, there are a number of indigenous cultures that follow the (one male) + (many females) where the breeding is controlled/mandated by matriarchy)

In this case, it's a young man who can't keep it in his pants and partners who don't practice safe sex. *shakes head* It takes two -- and it seems the women in this case knew what they were getting involved with.
