There's a town in the south, I recall the name of "Alliance"?--where the majority of unclaimed baggage from the major airlines is collected and auctioned off. There is a whole industry involved and the airlines get some revenue from it. There's no incentive to be above-board on the airlines' part.

And the TSA is an out-of-control beast born out of the Bush Administration's all-pervasive paranoia. Sheesh.

I did not know that, about the unclaimed luggage auctions. yet I should have guessed because they have some pretty detailed figures about it, don't they ( ... )

I recall that was both a poorly vented fuel tank and poorly maintained electrical wiring. There were other incidents in other aircraft to support the finding and change procedures. Sometimes an accident is in fact an accident.

And while Mythbusters did an okay job of debunking the Goldfinger climax premise, I would never carry a firearm aboard a pressurized aircraft if I were aircrew. I consider that to be too reckless.
