I know we call venison by that name from back in the day when people hunted to survive and deer was the big game. It comes from the Latin "Vēnor" (to hunt) and used to apply to any kind of deer, hare, pig, and antelope.

That is very interesting to know....

Wonder where we got "BEEF" "PORK" and such. lol.

Still... how come we don't have funny names for Chicken?

And how did Venison get stuck on DEER rather than hare or antelope??

*ponders*

Maybe it has something to do with the lack of people who eat hare and antelope? Maybe deer was more popular so the name stuck?

Pork might come from the French work for pig, which is porc. That's just a guess though.

I have no thoughts on the etymology of the word beef.

And from now on, you may say you're eating "cluck" instead of chicken.

Beef is from the old French word buef, ox, from latin bouv-, bos, head of cattle

you were right about pork Old French porc, pig, from Latin porcus

If you really want to call duck something you can always say water fowl for that is something they are refereed to as

I dunno if people would wanna eat something called Fowl (foul) lol.

I know it is its name, but it would be funny, and yet unappetizing.
