For the book, I've been writing about the different types of wool. I figured I knew them all, but just to be sure, checked good old Wikipedia.

Anyone heard of Chiengora? )

book, odd facts

There was a book called 'Spinning with Dog Hair', which had quite wide distribution a few years ago. Imagine how ghastly it would smell when wet ...

I feel itchy just thinking about it - but then I'm sure it's just fine. I wonder why they don't use cat hair? My cat Sophie has such beautiful, soft angora-like fur and she sheds it very happily for much of the year. I'm sure if we started collecting it we'd soon have enough for a...sock.

I miss my kittens. I hope yours are well?

Our house is permanently littered with cat-fur tumbleweeds - it would be nice to put it to a productive use! I'm sure one could spin with it (if one had sufficient motivation), although I think with the dog hair one only uses the soft undercoat, not the coarser external hairs.

The cats have been good - very comforting. I think they know what's going on.

I'm sure your lovely girls Ruby and Sophie are looking forward to your return, but I know they're being well cared for while you're away.

Sorry if it seems wildly inappropriate for me to be commenting about dog hair right now. I feel like I've had a lignocaine injection to the soul, very numb and far away. Thanks for your text message - it means a lot. Looking forward to catching up when you get back to Melbourne.

I think that there are people who do. I'd give it a go, if you collect it.

I was delighted to learn that they can get cashmere by combing the goats - COMBING THE GOATS!!!! - and that the goats sometimes look like THIS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Australain_cashmere_goat.png
