Well then

Ugh, you know what I hate? Cleaning product commercials. They're so sexist. I mean, seriously... this one for laundry detergent had a "lab" to show stain removal... all the people watching the demo were female. What woman sits and goes "Doing the family's laundry? Do want!"? If I ever end up getting married, unless that guy has a higher degree/more ( Read more... )

mcat, study abroad, bitching

I get you about the sexism. It sucks harcore and I keep wailing in my head: "Why can't the world be less shitty?!"
Hahahaha, yeah, no way you'll let some guy who has a lesser education than you order you around. *approves*

You're going to Japan! Awesome! How long will you stay there?

Wish I loved packing, too. It's quite the pain in the butt for me...

Gender role stuff just sends me into uncontrollable fits of rage. I especially hate that they try to make it some bit marketing thing. Like somehow it's awesome that we stereotype the genders? Wtf.

I'm glad you approve. As much as I love my father, his old school upbringing can really upset me. My mom works at a school cafeteria, hauling around 50 pound crates of food and preparing meals... so the last thing she really needs to feel obligated to do is make dinner at the end of the day. B| He sits on his butt in an office. I kind of think it's obvious who should have more energy for meal preparation.

Aaaanywho, I'll be in Japan until mid August, so it should be a pretty good stint. I'm really excited, but I wish I had more time to study and prepare for it. u___u

I think packing is a pain in the butt for most people, so I definitely won't complain about my weird quirks in that matter.

That's the one huge flaw in 2001: A Space Odyssey, too. We have the super shiny future with a space station, and bases on the moon, and fairlymuch routine space travel at least for scientists...and it's a sausage fest. All five of the scientists on the mission to Jupiter are men, and every flight attendant and secretary in the film is a woman. W. T. F. Massive fail, Stanley Kubrick. Massive fail.

I don't mind stuff like that in movies as much. Cause, honestly... how many female astronauts are there? And how many would want to be stuck with guys that long? Gross. XD But seriously, at that time, weren't space programs generally male driven? If the movie was made NOW, I'd say that was bad, because obviously as a society we have made a LITTLE progress... or at least there are people who will complain loudly enough that movie studios tend to be sensitive to how things like that look ( ... )

I just find that example funny because Kubrick got so many things right, or at least well thought out, and just had massive gender fail. Of course, a lot of sixties sci fi is like that. It's like...really? You couldn't look at the trends in the first half of the century and extrapolate?

And then there's John Ringo who is writing now and still manages to fail at that stuff. And my brother wonders why I'm not into those books.

Yeeah, I get what you're saying about the cleaning commercials, though. And pretty much every commercial for anything kid-related--it's never dads dealing with kids' nutrition or changing diapers. It's always the mom.

So one of my roommates has a boyfriend who cooks with her, and knits hats and stuff for her. I think she found a good one.

Weeeell, I have never seen that movie, and all I know about sci-fi in the 60s is from Star Trek. XD So I guess I can't really comment about that stuff.

Hm, cooking and knitting? I guess those are definitely some good points. Especially with the knitting.

I...never noticed that about those commercials. You've opened my eyes. XD;

*hugs* I'm glad and keep going, bb! I know you'll do good on those tests. :3

XDDDDDD At the last part, though it sounds like you're having fun doing all this! And as long as you are that's good. <3

XDD I do what I can to make people aware of the subtle injustices of the world.

@___@ My brain is soooo fried from reading and reviewing... it's getting really ridiculous. I took yesterday off to just relax and try to put the skull shrapnel back together after all the brain explosions and stuff. I think I needed it, but... now I feel like I should have studied. >__>

The things I find joy in can be a little strange... but at least they are legal! XDD

I don't think they are sexist. rgb_mic_mic March 11 2010, 08:17:12 UTC
I don't think those cleaning commercials are sexist. It's just the majority of people who buy the product are women. Now this coming from a girl who's mother hardly cleans or cooks. My Dad does most of the cleaning, vacuuming and cooking.

It's just their target audience is women. They think women will mostly be doing cleaning so they make the ad appealing for women to buy the product.

The majority of people buying cleaning products are female, and the companies are therefore trying to appeal to them. This is definitely true ( ... )

I'd say this whole thing falls into the "straw that broke the camels back" category. I've been frustrated with women's rights and issues for a long time, and occasionally it takes just one little thing to push me over the edge. Like a laundry commercial. XD ( ... )
