Takayuki Tatsumi & Edogawa Rampo

Yesterday I had the rare pleasure of attending a lecture by Professor Takayuki Tatsumi, who was visiting Swarthmore College.  Dr. Tatsumi is the author of, among others, American Cyberpunk, which was the first critical study undertaken of cyberpunk (1988), and Full Metal Apache: Transactions Between Cyberpunk Japan and Avant-Pop America.

I've read one collection of Rampo's stories. He was definitely working in the tradition of Poe, though with a tad more subtlety. :)

The lecture sounds wonderful. I'm afraid I missing Takayuki and Mari at ICFA this year, too. I really hoped to help honor him there.

I had a feeling you knew them, as when I mentioned the Poe anthology, he excitedly replied that he had a copy of it.

Yes, everybody going to ICFA this year has to make a huge fuss of Takayuki and Mari for those of us who can't make it. They're delightful, fun, smart people. And Mari knows more about feminist SF in America than most American scholars.

I've been friends with them since the 80s and traveled with them a little in Japan, last time I was there.
