I think jimhines had a discussion a while back at his place about how some of this is market dilution from the PublishAmerica types. A lot of bookstores can't actually trust an author coming in to do promotion anymore, so they just shut it off for all authors.

Yep, that's the gist of feedback I've gotten.
Or, to paraphrase another fine author, "Now courtesy of these fly-by-night publishing ventures, we all get to read the slush pile."

Your ideas on the American bookstore are so correct. I really wish more people would take up reading as hobby. People seem to be getting more stupid.

As an aspiring writer, I hope to have an audience to read my books, to share ideas and dream about the world.

Hardly anyone is paying attention to that anymore.
