Wow, Sweeney Todd is a miserable fucking bastard. I mean, I get he's sour about the whole deported-to-Australia, not-actually-dead-wife and yeah-actually-stolen-baby thing, but at a certain point, a tragic backstory and the fact that he's Johnny Depp in period clothing isn't enough to prevent me rolling my eyes at his endless bloody sulking. Jeez. ( Read more... )

I have not seen Sweeney Todd or Sleepy Hollow, the movie. The tv show, the two eps I've seen, is weirdly amusing. Much of the humor comes from the 250 year old man, Ichabod Crane, responding to modern life. Tom Mision, the actor who plays him, has some Johnny Depp attributes, eg, slender, with long brown hair.

I haven't even google-imaged tv!Ichabod, 'cause I know he's not gonna be as pretty as The Depp, but I have to say I am totally enamoured of the idea of a 250 year old dude trying to fight crime.in modern day New York.

They're in rural upstate NY, not NYC. But that reminds me of another time-travel cop show that was cut down before its time, IMHO. The US version of "Life on Mars" (deets: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_on_Mars_%28U.S._TV_series%29) was amusingly weird. It was the story of a detective in modern day NYC who gets hit by a car and wakes up as a detective sometime in the early '70's. He keeps bumping into the differences between life and police work then and now, eg, much more primitive forensic science. But he has a sort of psychic gift for finding evidence, especially when the little toy Mars Rover model shows up to lead him to it. The show was cancelled after 13 eps. You can tell that the writers had ideas they were planning to explore further down the road, and then came up with a rather anti-climactic ending at the last minute. But it's good fun, if you ever think of renting it ( ... )

Oh god, that show. It is so over the top, it's hard for me not to find it enjoyable.

Re: Sweeney Todd, it is also enjoyable for being ridiculous. I love the music, and Mrs Lovett, who is basically Harley Quinn except a terrible cook instead of a psychiatrist.

I'm definately gonna check this out!

I love that bit after Epiphany where Sweeney has this huge melodramatic "gonna kill ALL the dudes!" moment... and Mrs Lovett totally ruins it by being all "yeah whatever." I howled during that bit in the film. She was so unimpressed!
