Be careful.
Pffft.
Gabriel had had a hard time resisting rolling his eyes at the called words from the Captain as he headed off into an area that was still uncharted. He wasn’t a child, after all, and knew how to take care of himself. At least, that’s how he felt it. So far they hadn’t encountered anything truly dangerous, after all, so why should that change when he went off to document the designated area? Originally he was supposed to have a partner with him, but they had gotten sick, and instead of wanting to lay it as a burden on others, he decided that he could do it on his own.
He smiled to himself when he saw more of the odd, spiral plants that he had discovered on his first exploration of the planet, and eagerly went over to it to see if he could finally touch it before it got sucked down, but his fingers just barely brushed it before they all went down. He was laughing to himself until he raised his gaze, only to be met by a large creature that looked like one of the ancient, extinct dinosaurs of Earth.
Panic was what first struck him as he stared at the creature; frozen in place as he reeled his brain trying to think of a name for it, or anything really, but he was coming up blank. He’d never seen or heard of anything like it; which naturally meant that he didn’t know how to react when facing it.
Slowly he started to back up, though that seemed to only make the animal draw closer as well, but stopping wasn’t stopping it either. A deep breath was taken before he cast a glance over his shoulder to calculate the best way to go, before he took a last look at the creature - and then turned and ran. Of course, running really never was the best idea in situations like that, but in that moment it was all he could think of, and with panic making adrenalin rush through his veins, it was the best plan he had.
He could hear it coming up behind him as he ran, and drawing closer too, though his life didn’t flash before his eyes the way he had always thought it would. Instead all that was on his mind was how much it was going to hurt when the imminent impact occurred, though before it could completely consume his mind; he felt something crash into him from the side; knocking the wind out of him and him out at the same time.
Gabriel groaned to himself as he started to come to, closing his eyes tightly; hoping that it had all just been a bad dream. It wasn’t, though, and panic ran through him again as he opened his eyes finally, only to realize that he was still in the jungle, and that it was night. Before he could scramble to his feet there was a heavy hand on him; pushing him back down against the ground, though the panic just rose further as a tall, blue humanoid loomed over him with a scowl on its face.
“Morning. It’s not safe at night.”
“You…you speak standard?” Gabriel asked, forcing himself into an upright position again; though as soon as he was up he was pushed right back down.
The question received no reply. The other instead just finally letting go of him when he seemed to settle on the ground, and started to leave; though turned again before disappearing into the dark.
“Morning.”
Gabriel in all honesty wanted to move. To run back to his camp and say that he was alright, that there was nothing to worry about, but he had a feeling that there was truth in the alien’s words. He had after all almost gotten killed while just walking in midday light, so perhaps walking at night wouldn’t be the best idea.
He settled against the moss, and finally opened his eyes to see all that was around him, and he was awed by the sheer beauty of it. It was a side that they hadn’t seen before, of that he was sure, and he knew that he wouldn’t be getting any sleep that night, in fear that he might miss something he’d never get the chance to see again.
All other thoughts were pushed aside in that moment was he watched the sky - he’d deal with the Doctor and Captain’s worries when he got back to them the following day.
