It's natural to want special people (like family) to share in our happiness. I think sometimes our regrets lead us to appreciate more what we have so I try not to think of it as a negative thing. Sounds as if you did right by your mother. What a honor to see you daughter graduate with a medical degree, congrats to her.

One thing I wish was that my father had lived to see America elect it's first African American president. But otoh, my children voted in that election and felt part of the process.

Isn't it life that we now see from the perspective of a parent now, when we were children? We both appreciate our children. That's a life lesson for me.
